A few bass, many squid and some very big lobsters have been caught in the last few weeks so the fishing scene has improved after a poor start to the year. September has been very dry with Indian Summer weather so looking at the Visitors' book at Briar Cottage, apart from half July and August, the summer has been pretty good. But it is bonfire time now and woe betide anyone lighting one when the prevailing wind will take the smoke to a neighbouring washing line! The blackberries have been wonderful and much wine and jam making has been taking place up and down the valley. A month of northerly wind has brought even more sand onto the beaches at Porthcurno and Pedny and even with a small 15 foot tide there has been a dry walk from Porthcurno to Barn Castle. There must be thousands of tons of sand shifting all the time. The birders and twitchers have arrived in force in the last 10 days or so but we haven't heard of any rare migrants being seen. However, one of the new Tamar Class Lifeboats, of the type due to arrive in Sennen next month was sighted in the Cove one evening this week.
